What is salt
Mainly made from sodium chloride and other chemical compounds, salt is found throughout seawater and various rock formations. Salt is a naturally occurring mineral located almost everywhere in the world, from the ponds of France to the caves of Pakistan. Salt is one of the most sought after substances in the world not only for its flavor enhancing, but for also being essential to the human body in order for the brain to send vital electrical signals throughout the body. It is so desired by humankind that it was once a form of payment in Ancient Roman times, which is where we get the word “salary.”
Food flavor
Salt is most commonly used for flavoring foods as it enhances their aroma. It is also excellent for food preservation and cleaning due to its antibacterial properties. One thing that is important to note is that the size of the salt grain will impact the flavor strength and the amount of salt needed in a recipe. Therefore, you should not interchange one salt type for another as it will impact your final result.
History of salt
The medical history of salt begins in ancient times and is closely related to different aspects of human history. Salt may be extracted from sea water, mineral deposits, surface encrustations, saline lakes and brine springs. In many inland areas, wood was used as a fuel source for evaporation of brine and this practice led to major deforestation in central Europe. Salt played a central role in the economies of many regions, and is often reflected in place names. Salt was also used as a basis for population censuses and taxation, and salt monopolies were practiced in many states. Salt was sometimes implicated in the outbreak of conflict, e.g. the French Revolution and the Indian War of Independence. Salt has also been invested with many cultural and religious meanings, from the ancient Egyptians to the Middle Ages.
Salt as a medicine
Man’s innate appetite for salt may be related to his evolution from predominantly vegetarian anthropoids, and it is noteworthy that those people who live mainly on protein and milk or who drink salty water do not generally salt their food, whereas those who live mainly on vegetables, rice and cereals use much more salt. Medicinal use tended to emphasize the positive aspects of salt, e.g. prevention of putrefaction, reduction of tissue swelling, treatment of diarrhea. Evidence was also available to ancient peoples of its relationship to fertility, particularly in domestic animals. The history of salt thus represents a unique example for studying the impact of a widely used dietary substance on different important aspects of man’s life, including medical philosophy.
Kinds of salt
What Is Sea Salt?
Sea salt is salt that is gathered from evaporated sea water. It is generally obtained naturally in dry climates where there are bays and ponds. Large salt crystals are produced when the water evaporates from the salt, creating the lightest and flakiest salt type. You will find the most variety of salt colors when it comes to sea salt.

What Is Rock Salt?
Rock salt is salt that has been extracted from underground salt mines through the process of mining with dynamite and then crushed further for food use. It can be found under the rugged layers of the earth’s surface and is scientifically known as halite.

What Is Fine Salt?
Fine salt is a salt with extremely fine salt grains that are extracted from salt brines. This practice creates a higher yield, cleaner product, and is generally more inexpensive. By pumping water below the earth’s surface, salt deposits are dissolved, which creates salt brines. From there, the salt brine is brought to the earth’s surface and the water is evaporated from it to create the salt that we find on our tables and in our cabinets.

What is Cleaning Salt?
Cleaning salt is sodium chloride mixed with other chemicals and minerals to boost its antibacterial properties and breakdown calcium and magnesium. It can be used in a variety of ways to clean everything from kitchens to bathrooms and can prolong the life of appliances.

Why we use salt?
- Food Grade Salt
Since the human body is not capable of producing its own salt, we depend upon the various sources of salt in food to ensure our necessary daily intake. In Europe, around 7% of all salt produced is food grade salt. Salt has an important technological role in the manufacture of many foods, so that in addition to its well-known function as a preserver and a flavor enhancer, it is also fundamental to the consistency and texture of lots of our daily foods such as bread and cheese.
- De-icing
Salt, i.e. Sodium chloride is the most widely used de-icing agent in Europe and throughout the world due to its huge advantages over the alternatives. It is not only widely naturally occurring and easy to store and apply, hence the least expensive, but it also has the least environmental impact when used properly. In fact, according to the IfAÖ (German Institute for Applied Ecology), alternative de-icing formats are six to eight times more expensive than salt.
When salt is applied to ice and snow it creates a brine that has a lower freezing temperature than the surrounding ice or snow. It is also most efficient as a de-icer when spread before ice has formed. Whilst in theory salt can work to lower temperatures, it is usually used at temperatures down to -15°C.
Function of salt on body
Salt helps our body retain water and helps keep our blood pressure normal in case of hyponatremia (low blood sodium levels). When sodium levels in the blood decrease it signals a cascade of enzyme which further signals the kidney to retain sodium and water hence bringing the blood pressure to normal levels When sodium levels in the blood decrease, it sends a signal to our brain which further signals our kidney to retain sodium and water. This helps increase our blood sodium levels further normalizing our blood pressure.
Nerve stimulant
Salt also plays as an important nerve stimulant for proper functioning of our muscles. Sodium acts as a messenger between your brain and muscles. Sodium from our body acts on the nerve cells which triggers a signal. When your muscles sense this signal, they begin to contract. Contraction or movement of different muscles not only provide you support and allow for movement but also maintain your heart beat. Low levels of sodium in our body disrupt this nerve to muscle signal leading to muscle weakness as well as spasms and cramps and increase in heart-beat. If left untreated, it can lead to serious health problems such as unconsciousness, convulsions or even coma.
Salt contains many important nutrients
Salt contains many important nutrients which activate several salivary and digestive enzymes that aid in proper digestion and absorption of food in our stomach. Salt helps activate salivary enzyme which helps our taste bud recognize food and also get a head start on break down of food. It also creates hydrochloric acid, which is a digestive secretion from within the stomach, which aids in digestion and absorption of food. Hence, one of the reasons for indigestion of food could be lack of salt in our diet.
