Deer have large ears, short tails, and long, slender legs. On each foot they have two small and two large hooves. Deer usually have smooth, brown fur. White areas often cover the chest and throat.

Male deer are called bucks. A group of deer is called a herd. Does (female deer) have one or two babies in the spring or early summer. Deer can run up to 30 miles per hour to escape.

Deer are the only group of animals in the world to have antlers. Antlers are the fastest growing living tissue in the world!

Deer are herbivores, meaning they feed on leaves and plants. 

They gain energy from consuming grass or leaves, but are themselves a food source for predators. Traditionally in North America, white-tailed deer are eaten by wolves or cougars.

Deer live all over both North and South America, mainly in forests and tall prairie grass. Depending on where you live, you might even see deer in your backyard! In hot weather, they like to live in fields and forests with tall trees for shade.

When the temperature drops, deer often take shelter sleeping under coniferous trees like pine trees. The dense, low branches of these trees both protect the deer from wind and falling snow while creating a makeshift roof that holds in heat.

Deer are a crepuscular species, which means they are mainly active during the twilight hours, dusk and dawn. This is when they move to their feeding areas for the night or back to their beds to sleep during the day. It’s when the bucks chase the does.
