Nuclear energy

Nuclear energy is like any other form of electrical power generation, except solar photovoltaic.

A generator uses the spinning from the turbines to induce electrical current in a conductor through a physical process called induction.

It might be beyond a 5 year old, but the gist is that a generator converts mechanical energy (something spinning) into electrical energy.

This electricity is fed into the power grid for use by businesses and you and I.

In hydroelectric dams, this generator is powered by the energy of falling water.

In thermal power plants (think nuclear, coal, oil, natural gas, biomass) this fluid is actually hot steam.

The difference between nuclear and other thermal plants is where this heat comes from.

The other thermal plants heat water through combustion.

This heat boils water, which turns to steam and is fed to the turbine.

Afterwards, this steam is cooled back to liquid and a lower temperature, and fed back for the process to continue.

Combustion by definition consumes the fuel and oxygen, and produces carbon dioxide, water, potentially carbon monoxide, as well as other pollutants in the process.

Current nuclear power plants use a process called nuclear fission to generate this heat, rather than “burning” uranium.

To understand nuclear fission one must know a bit of atomic physics.
